Roger Gifkins

Roger is a specialist boxmaker with his work directed towards small, very detailed boxes featuring ultra-precise joinery.

Over the past 15 years he has refined his techniques for delicate hand-cut dovetails and super accurate machine cut joinery. His approach is often from a metal-working rather than a woodworking perspective.

He is a self taught woodworker, starting with furniture in 1980 and rapidly progressing to smaller, more detailed work. Three books by James Krenov were a major influence in this change of direction. His earlier studies in maths and physics have no doubt played an important role in the precision and care with which he approaches woodwork.

Prizes include the National Woodwork Competition in 1993, and the Australian Wood Design exhibition in 1994. Roger's work is often commssioned by state and federal governments as official gifts, including two hoxes presented to Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1993, he taught a small joinery course at the Institute of the Arts at the ANU.
