Mallet Box

Modern boatbuilding is a fascinating disipline for me. Wooden boats are required to withstand enormous environmental and physical pressures. The caulking mallet contained in this box is a vital part of that tradition and technology. Caulking plays a crucial role in the weather sealing of carvel planked boats such as the Spray, the first recorded boat to single handedly circumnavigate the globe.

The box's lid refers to this tradition in two ways. Its curvature refers to the shape of a boat's hull. Huon pine is used to represent the planks and red cedar is used to represent the caulking material. The curved triangular shape of the box's lid is reminiscent of the sails on a ship - one of the truely wonderful ways to enjoy and understand the experience of sailing and the sea.
